Year overview

2029 — 13 masas, one of them adhika

The year as the Andhra & Telangana tradition counts it: amanta months for Hyderabad. A Gregorian year never contains a whole number of lunar months, so the first and last rows spill past 1 January and 31 December.

2029 carries an adhika masa. An intercalary month is inserted to keep the lunar year in step with the solar one. Every festival in the masa that follows it moves about thirty days later than the year before, and most observances are kept in the nija (true) month rather than the adhika one. If a date matters this year, this is the row to check it against.

Sankranti times are the instant the sun enters the raasi, shown in Hyderabad's clock. Which civil day a solar month is taken to begin on differs by tradition — Tamil Nadu uses a sunset rule, Kerala an aparahna rule, Bengal a midnight rule — so those presets will not simply read this column. Why →
